Mearns Probus: meeting on Wednesday 22nd March.
Great Exhibition 1938 and Glasgow Garden Festival 1988
Tom Marchant
Fancy an afternoon at the movies? Hot on the heels of this week’s Oscars, we’ve got a special film lined up for you (but leave your bags of popcorn at home, please!).
Tom Marchant, a retired chartered quantity surveyor and keen amateur filmmaker, was a guest at our last meeting. Afterwards, he kindly offered to show us his two-part film about the greatest UK festivals of the 20th century – the Empire Exhibition, held in Bellahouston Park in 1938, and the unforgettable Glasgow Garden Festival of 1988. Employing colour film which was unique in its day, Tom created this superb example of cinematic art with the help of his late wife Josette.
To whet your appetite even more, Tom’s film will be preceded by the Annual General Meeting for 2022/3. This highly anticipated event will give you a rare opportunity to hear Larry and me (normally just the shadowy figures behind the money bags and the mind-numbing emails).
