In my time at the club, we’ve had guest speakers from the Conservatives and Labour, but not from the governing party, the SNP.
Now we’re about to put that right. Our next speaker is Alex Neil, who was the MSP for the Airdrie and Shotts constituency from 2011 to 2021, when he retired. Alex was a Government minister under both Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon, so he may have some interesting comparisons to make. He was Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing from 2012 to 2014 and Cabinet Secretary for Social Justice, Communities and Pensioners’ Rights from 2014 to 2016, when he resigned from Nicola Sturgeon’s Government.
Alex’s talk to us will be about “Scotland’s Future”, so we may hear his views on the prospects for independence. In any event, he is a powerful speaker and debater who has won three major prizes in The Herald’s Scottish Politician of the Year awards, so we can expect a candid and colourful address.
I look forward to seeing you in Fairweather Hall at2pm on Wednesday 6 March.
Examination of our membership figures by your committee has highlighted the urgent need for new members to join us and thereby ensure that our club can look forward to a promising future. We are deeply concerned about the problem caused by low recruitment at the same time as losing members for a variety of reasons. Attendance at meetings is also lower than in the past. This could eventually affect the calibre of speakers who we invite to address us.
We urge each of you to identify or recruit new members. Please look for every opportunity to promote Probus to a wider audience. Your committee is ready to assist if required.
